Does your makeup look patchy?
Do you have visible lines after you apply foundation?
Is your face oily after only a couple hours of wearing makeup?
If your answer to any of these questions is “yes”, well then you should definitely keep reading my lovely article 🙂
So what is a primer and what does it do?
As a beauty geek, I’m always looking for new products to help me look more and more flawless…A few years back I met a parisian makeup artist in Milan, and she introduced me to the world of Primers. So basically her trick was applying a little primer on my face right before the application of foundation, and massaging it for a few seconds until fully absorbed. At that moment I knew exactly what I was missing on my quest for flawless makeup. This magical product made my skin look so matte in a matter of seconds; it killed all the shine, reduced the redness and appearance of big pores and fine lines. The best part was, after she applied foundation on my face, it felt like this was the first time my foundation actually looked dewy and clear. My makeup stayed as it was for the next 12 hours without any touch ups, stickiness, or smudging around my forehead and cheeks! I was so surprised because I usually need touch ups every few hours, since I have oily skin. It really helps in keeping that flawless look for a much longer period of time.
( The picture on the left was taken before I put on the primer. Focus on my cheek; you can see my pores, and my cheek is shiny. The picture on the right was taken after I applied the primer; you don’t see my open pores, and the shine is less )
Face Primers have become extremely crucial in the beauty industry, and all the makeup artists and beauty geeks around the world literally swear by this product. It helps fill in visible lines and provides a smooth canvas for your foundation. Primers are normally used before you start your makeup, and after you have applied your moisturizer. They usually come in either a transparent base or a creamy base. It should be applied on your face, eyelids, and under your eyes as well. It’s a must if you want that flawless look you see on celebrities.
Napoleon Perdis, the celebrity makeup artist and founder of this beauty brand, has this mantra, “not to prime is a crime”…and I agree completely. It’s been 4 years now, I haven’t stopped applying primers, and I love my skin even more!
Where to get them and which ones are good?
First of all, always keep your skin-type in mind. If you have oily skin, then look for a primer that says “Matte”, “Matte Finish”, “Mattefying”, or something similar on the label. If you have dry skin, then look on the label for words like “Hydrating”, “Moisture-based”, or something similar. I have put together a list of primers available in India and worldwide. Internationally, the options are never-ending. In India it’s more difficult because primers are still not very well-known here. However, we do have some options, and I’ve tried and chosen some primers which work pretty well for me. Also remember I have an oily skin-type 🙂 These are easily available in India:
Colorbar – Perfect Match Primer ( My top pick, available in-store/online – Price: Rs 825 )
The Body Shop – Skin Primer – Matte It ( Available in-store/online – Price: Rs 1195 )
These ones are also available in India, I haven’t tried them myself, but they have gotten very good reviews, and please let me know how they work for you:
Bourjois – Flower Perfection Translucent Smoothing Primer ( In-store/online – Price: Rs 710 )
Inglot – Under Makeup Base ( In-store/online – Price: Rs 1300 )
These ones are available internationally, at Sephora and many other places. I’ve tried all of these:
Benefit – The POREfessional ( This is my current favorite – Price: Rs 1195)
Chanel – Le Blanc De Chanel Sheer Illuminating Base ( My second pick – Price: Rs 2796 )
SMASHBOX – Photo Finish Foundation Primer – Light ( Price: Rs 2237 )
MAC – Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF 50 ( Price: Rs 1864 )
Laura Mercier – Mineral Powder SPF 15 ( Price: Rs 2050 )
I hope you all enjoyed this article on face primers! Don’t forget to “like” this article, if you liked it of course 🙂 And leave comments below for any queries.
